Anyone who has been the guest of the family of M. Hamida Fakhkharri has witnessed the importance given to pottery in the home. Ambling through the potters quarter you will see the action of worker's spatulated fingers shaping a fragile architecture of wet clay on the spindle, soon to become a vase or jar!. From generation to generation, such dynasty's world is one of a thousand fantastic shapes. Baked in their high conical kiln with its trail of black smoke, come the humblest of kitchen vessels in which women cook their tajin but also there emerges the decorative delight of the elegant amphora.
Pottery is practiced everywhere through the country but the celebrated ornamental wares are produced mainly at Fez specially within Aïn Noqbi where Mr. Naji Fakhkharri has perpetuated such art while remaining rigidly, not only faithful to his family tradition, but also curious of contemporary tendencies and instinctive feeling for from preserving their charm and authenticity witch is the design of "ART NAJI"
Soil is a raw material found in the vicinity of the town of Fez, more precisely at 20 km.
As raw material, it is under the form of grey rocks that are grinded at hammer stams and then are set in a hole full of water in order that it would become soft.
Then comes the role of the labourer with his feet and his hands in order to separate the little stones from the paste that he gets out and sets under the sun.
The drying time depends on the season : in Summer the operation takes less time than in winter. The degree of hardness meets the needs of either pottery and/or mosaic: in mosaic it is less hard than in pottery.
